  1. The Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge 2013 from the Year 6 Perspective

    You may remember that Pseudomyxoma Survivor were really lucky to have Julie run the London Marathon in support of the charity.  Julie is a primary school teacher and she engaged some of the children in her marathon challenge.  Some of the children wanted to share their experiences with us.  We say a big thank you to them for all their support, you guys have been amazing!!!

    Yr 6 Marathon Challenge

    Before

    It was just another school day when Ms T said that we were going to run a marathon. I thought, how are we going to do this, we haven’t been training? Ms T then said “We are going to run it in small parts.” Then I thought “Ohhhhhhh.” There was a whole session on how we were going to do it and things like that. When Ms T showed us the route, I thought, “Wait, how are we going to do this?”........

    During

    At first I said, “Oh my gosh!” I was feeling so tired! But, when I go used to it, and we got to use the football it was so much easier! On the last day we could do it. The reception children came to support us and there was a finish line. We all walked together and 5 meters from the finish line, we ran our fastest through it.

    After

    We were so tired! I felt really of myself because I ran 42 km (26 miles)! I have learned from this challenge it isn’t about coming first, it’s about taking part.

    juliemarathonIn February, our class decided that we should do a marathon challenge. Ms T said that we should run to raise awareness for a cancer called Pseudomyxoma Survivor which is a rare cancer that starts in the appendix and works up. We had to run 26 miles (42km) in 12 weeks.

    When we selected the marathon, some people weren’t that keen on doing it, but everybody liked it after a few weeks. Everybody enjoyed it and we really had a good time even though we had many stitches. It would feel more painful to have cancer than have a stitch. When we ran we felt out of breath. It was really easy when we worked in groups. We played football and used all sorts of equipment to keep us as a team. When we finished our challenge, we felt so proud. Nearly every week we had a piece of fruit or vegetables. When we crossed the line we felt amazing.

    The time we finished the challenge in, was the time Ms T had to try and beat when she ran her marathon. We finished in 5:49.42; unfortunately Ms T beat our time. Ms T’s time was 4:28:01. Even though we didn’t win, we had fun.

    Our names are Rachel and Hillary. When we crossed the line it was fantastic. We had a brilliant time running, especially in a group. At the start we thought we couldn’t do it, but we WILL do it again.

    In January our class decided that we should do a marathon. Ms T said that we should run for the charity Pseudomyoxma Survivor which is a rare cancer. Ms T chose it because her friend called Jenny has PMP Cancer.

    When we started the marathon, people weren’t that keen because we thought that it was impossible, but when we got the hang of it we loved running, The furthest we ran at once was 7.5km Many of us were speeding ahead, (that not including me) so Ms T gave us items to use to keep a group of 6 together. After that, loads of people caught up and it was more of a team effort.

    My name is Tara and when I crossed the finish I felt great not just because I had completed my challenge but because the year 2’s and receptions came to cheer us on.

    Marathon Race

    We loved the marathon race a lot because it was fun and very exciting. It was very tiring, but we loved it especially when Ms T gave us fruit and made us cookies. No matter what the weather was we still tried our best. Our time was 5:49:42 for 42 km over 12 weeks.

    When we finished the marathon we missed it a lot.

    We really tried our best to raise as much money as we can for the charity called Pseudomyxoma Survivor.

    We would still run if we had the choice. We really liked the race; we tried not to cut corners during the race.

    When the year 2’s were cheering us on, we felt very special and very proud of ourselves.

    This will be in our memories forever.

    MY LAST BREATH........

    Our run was very tiring, but Ms T gave us delicious fruit to make us more determined to carry on. It took 42 breath taking kms. We ran every Tuesday. It took us 5 hours and 49 minutes.

    When we crossed the finishing line, Mrs T and the reception children made us feel special. Ms T beat our time however she did not come first, but she tried her best. She finished in 4hrs and 28 minutes.

    We all think Ms T did great.

    We used a football to teach us to stay together as a team and to help us get more stamina.

    What we learned:

    • Working together
    • Not always about winning
    • Team work gets you further
    • Slow and steady
    • More determined

    The Marathon Nightmare........

    I was excited and gobsmacked after Ms T blurted out that we were doing the marathon; on the other hand Zoe wasn’t so excited about running 42 km.

    We have never ever run for charity before so this was our first time raising money and awareness for Pseudomyxoma Survivor (PMP). Our challenge was to raise funds for the charity and set Ms T a time for Ms T to beat at the London Marathon.

    We faced rain, wind and the boiling hot weather. At first I was rushing then I started to feel exhausted. I was so tired; I nearly smacked myself to the floor. Zoe was dying for water and rest. In the end, it was easier and we managed to finish the race.

    During the marathon Ms T kindly offered us fruits and treats. We started running independently and then we worked in groups. Then we thought about other things that would keep us together. We turned on our brains and thought about football and passing the ball to one another.

    In the end, the receptions came and supported us with cheering and clapping. It was amazing. I learnt that it want always about the winner and Zoe learned not to judge what things will be like and never give up as she felt it was fun and joyful.

    Ms T (our PE Teacher) Ran the London Marathon and timed how long it was to finish it. She came back with the results, told us the time and if she beat our time, we lost. I was shocked and Zoe was surprised.

    In the end we were relieved and felt incredible that we reached our goal.

    The Long Challenge

    In January, we started to do a marathon for PMP, We were determined to beat Ms T and to raise at least £100.

    It was hard at the beginning but it got easy. I liked when we got to use the footballs. At the end, I felt amazing when we passed the finish line. We did the marathon over 15 weeks. Even though we tried our best, Ms T beat us. We got our time by the slowest and fasted times and averaging it out. Our time was 5:49:42 and hers was 4:28:01

    Pseudomyxoma Survivor

    We did our marathon together no matter what the weather hot or cold, just for PMP.

    PMP is a rare cancer that not many people have. PMP is a cancer that builds up in the appendix that means you have to have a special operation.

    The goal was set up for us to raise money to help people with pseudomyxoma. We were doing this because of Ms T’s marathon and because of the people suffering. When I found out about our challenge, I didn’t know what to say. When we started I was really proud of myself. When Ms T said that we would be doing the marathon I was excited but it was tiring.

  2. Stacey and Antje were the 'Mucky Girls' for Pseudomyxoma Survivor

    Today's guest blogger is Stacey who tells us why she and Antje took part in The Gauntlet.

    Pseudomyxoma SurvivorWe did it!

    We ran THE GAUNTLET 5.8k race at Mucky Races!

    Considering it had snowed only the week before, the weather was kind to us.  It was sunny but fresh.  However, it also meant the water along the course was very high and also very cold so our nerves were showing a little.  Well, mine were as it was my first time taking part in a Mucky Races event, Antje seemed quite calm about it all having ran a 'Guts and Glory' event previously.   We all gathered for a warm-up to music organised on the day then progressed to the start line.

    The first thing was to run past Spains Hall,  Elizabethan country house near Finchingfield in Essex, and I have to say, it's absolutely beautiful.  This was the civilised part of the race, it got seriously mucky from here on in.  Next up, running through the woods and scrambling over ditches.  All pretty dry so far...

    Then we got to the lake.  We all took it in turns to wade through the edge of the lake with water up to our waists.  Antje and I decided we'd hold hands through all the tough obstacles and it was a good tactic as it was pretty slippery.  After another run through the grounds and out into the countryside, we came to a stream where some locals had set up a little spot in the sunshine, enjoying a pint and a giggle at the crazy muddy people trekking past their house.  We could really have done with a pint at this point! Ha ha!

    Our task was to 'run' across the stream then on to the obstacles the other side.  We had to balance along a beam, go under a rope cargo net then 'hop' through a load of tyres.  All energy sapping stuff.  More running then on to a deep ditch.  We had to cross it so many times I lost count! It was so deep sided and by this point as so many people had trundled through it, was so slippery getting out of either side that Antje and I stopped for ages helping out other ladies who were also stuck.  It wasn't the most glamorous of situations to be in, we're all covered in mud being pushed and pulled all over the place, but I've never laughed so much.  It was brilliant! 

    Getting mucky for Pseudomyxoma SurvivorAfter the ditches came the wall. It was a series of huge hay bales towering over six foot.  After more pushing and pulling and a few leg ups we got ourselves and others up and over and then on to more running through the woods.  Then the mud pit. This part of the course was SO muddy, we sank down past our knees the second we tried to walk on it. So crawling it was then! At this point we were starting to be lapped by the crazy 12k runners. As so many people had passed through the mud pit before us, it had got so bad the course guides advised we crawled around the edges. A few people were now stuck in the middle of the pit and I think they were seriously considering having to pull people out by a rope!  Several people lost shoes at this point but Antje and I had taped ours to our feet. 

    More lakes, more pits, more ditches and more nets to crawl under until the final obstacle.  The raft.  It was floating on a pond that was about waist height and we had to dive under it through the muddy water.  It was quite disorientating and SO cold it took your breath away.  We were both so proud of ourselves for doing it though. A final push took us to the finish line looking wet and bedraggled but surprisingly clean after our little dip.  Yay, we did it!  Participants were given a goody bag and a t-shirt (which I now wear with pride at bootcamp) and we trundled back to the car to dry off, warm up and refuel.  Exhausted and bruised but happy.

    We dedicated our sponsorship to Pseudomyxoma Survivor as our lovely friend Claire has been fighting PMP for some time.  We felt that although there are so many deserving charities out there and many people pick a large well known one, this one was close to our hearts and Pseudomyxoma Survivorwe wanted to raise as much awareness as we could. The support and friendliness of Pseudomyxoma Survivor has been so important for Claire and as there is so little aid or awareness of this type of cancer we felt we just had to help in any way we could. What better way than to get MUCKY?!

  3. Julie’s Marathon Journey

    As you may know, Julie was lucky enough to secure a place in the London Marathon 2013 and kindly volunteered to run in support of Pseudomyxoma Survivor.  As if this wasn't enough, Julie also established and co-ordinated the Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge 2013 where she encouraged us to run, walk or crawl a marathon in whatever timme was a personal challenge.  Julie has been amazing thoughout, enthusing us and the children at the school where she teaches and producing amazing progress charts for us to share.  Julie tells us about her marathon challenge:

    Julie shares her marathon story with Pseudomyxoma SurvivorThe last several months leading have been quite the journey and I have loved almost every minute. I admit that I find my new love for running quite strange as this time last year I never, ever had the desire to run more than 10km; that was painful enough.

    Julie shares her marathon story with Pseudomyxoma SurvivorMy husband decided that it would be funny if he signed me up for the marathon ballot as he was entering himself, this remained secret until October of 2012 when he got his commiseration letter and I didn’t. Instead I got a letter of congratulations. I can’t even put into words how I felt about this except that I felt as though I had just had my car towed. I had no idea what I was going to do. I certainly wasn’t excited or grateful for my wonderful surprise. I had time to think about withdrawing or deferring my spot for 2014, I knew deep down neither was an option as it wasn’t fair to the people who really wanted to do it (like my hubby) and I knew in 2014 I would feel the same way. I came across a quote that helped me make my decision:

    Excuses are always there.....opportunities aren’t

    From that moment, I knew I was going to do this even if it killed me.

    I started my training in January under the direction husband and believe it or not, we still actually love each other. Through the weeks, I slowly increased my mileage and after several weeks, each long run was a milestone for me. Every time I went that bit further I became more and more proud and wanted to go further. I realised I had never really had enough faith in myself to push my limits. I am so pleased that this journey has made me realise the only way for me to realise my true potential is to try. I have loved the fact that I have been able to run slowly and not have to make excuses for it. Now when people pass me on the roads, I quietly say to myself, “I bet they are not running as far as me today”.  I have been looking forward to each and every run. People are right when they say running is the cheapest form of therapy. Each run gave me time to think about anything and anyone, time to myself, peace and quiet and just a chance to appreciate the world around me, and what a great place it is. I always feel on top of the world when I am done.

    Strangely as race day approached (way quicker than I had hoped) I felt calmer and more and more excited. I think this was because I visualised this day in my head so many times. I saw myself running with a smile, with my special little angel on my shoulder encouraging me to keep going. I envisioned my smile getting bigger with every passing mile. Oddly, this is exactly how the “race” played out. The morning of the race I had an aura of peace around me; everything went smoothly from travelling up to the race, to checking in my bags, and finding where I needed to start. Once I got there, there was nothing left to think about but just to take one step at a time, have fun and finish the race. I won’t lie, even though I enjoyed EVERY second of the race there were moments where I got really emotional and a bit choked up. I just couldn’t believe that I was actually doing the race and enjoying it.

    Looking at all the charity shirts over the 26.2 miles made me realise how many stories of heartache, pain, joy and happiness there is out there, and this gave me that much more motivation to give it my all. It was such a beautiful day and the crowds helped to fuel the fire within, especially when I saw my hubby Matt at Mile 11 and Mile 24 with TEAM PMP (Dawn, Kirsten, Megan, Angela, Sarah and Jenny).  This gave me that extra boost to get me to the end. I was so unbelievably touched that they all travelled up to London to cheer me on, especially when I had never met most of the team before. I was going to finish strong for them.

    It wasn’t long until I saw the finish line in the distance, 800m, 600m, 400m, 200m I could feel myself starting to bubble over with excitement as I was nearly there. I crossed that line with so much pride for myself. I was on top of the world and I didn’t want that moment to end.....EVER!! Sadly it has, but I have fond memories of the day and yes......I would do it all again in a heartbeat!! Best experience ever and I am so glad to have chosen such a special charity and special people to run for.

    Would I do it again?? ABSOLUTELY, YES!! I was the only runner for Pseudomyxoma Survivor, but all it takes is one person to make a little difference.   4. Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge - Team LA's report

    As you may know, Julie ran the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday last to raise awareness of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.  She had an amazing race finishing in 4:28:01 - beating her target of 4:30:00.  Not only has Julie been training for this, her first marathon, but she has also been managing the Pseudomyxoma Marathon Challenge 2013.  At the beginning of the year, Julie set us a challenge to run, walk or crawl 26 miles/42 km in a predetermined period, whatever was a challenge to you personally.

    For example:

    42km in 4 weeks = 10.5km/week
    42km in 8 weeks = 5km/week + 2 bonus km
    42km in 12 weeks = 3.5km/week

    Support for the challenge has been fantastic.  As well as classes at the school where Julie teaches taking part, she has had support worldwide.  Today, our guest blogger is Deborah, herself a pseudomyxoma survivor, who co-ordinated the challenge for 'team LA' in sunny California:

    Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge - Team LA's reportOne of the most positive things that came out of my illness was finding an amazing group of PMP Cancer patients, caregivers and survivors simply called PMP Cancer Survivors Group.  They are an 800 plus strong group that shares stories, gives support and information to patients and their caregivers.

    Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge - Team LA's bibsWhenever I have an odd symptom, I find someone in the group who has had it and has a solution. Before this group, I would panic over things that were normal for someone who has had my illness and treatment.  They also bolster each other mentally and emotionally. It is beyond wonderful to have a group of people to talk to who have walked in my shoes.  They are there for Jon as well.  If this wasn't enough, the group has members who've started charities to raise awareness or to help fund research or help patients. One such charity is Pseudomyxoma Survivor.  On Sunday, one of our group ran in the London Marathon to help raise money and awareness for the charity.  There is so little in the way of aid for this cancer every little bit truly helps.  To help support the group, Jon, Ohio buddy Bruce Kline, the infamous Craig and I have been doing our own marathons to raise money.  Every week we log those miles. This past Friday, we passed 53 miles or two marathons.  We were hoping that in doing this, Julie wouldn't be running alone.

    Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge - Team LA - DebI thought of it as running a marathon on the layaway plan. I do at least 3 miles per errand and at least 4 errands a week. The miles add up quickly.  Jon walks two miles per day as part of his commute to work, and then we do 3 or more on the weekends.  We decided to finish our second marathon circuit walking from Marina del Rey to Venice Circle on Venice Beach.  It was a 4 mile stretch to cap off a week of walking every day.  Though it probably wasn't smart for me to do after a week that included planting a community garden.  I really wanted to do as much as the rest of the team did last week.

    Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge - Team LA - BruceBruce Kline does his walking during disc golf when not relaying traffic reports for his Columbus radio station.  He does 3 to 4 miles each course and typically does a couple courses a week.  Bruce and I have been friends since the 1980s when we both worked in Manhattan.  He was an aspiring musician and radio DJ.  I was trying to peddle my writing.  Currently, he is a musician in his home town of Columbus, Ohio where he is an on-air radio personality.  He also writes music for some of our film ventures.

    Pseudomyxoma Survivor Marathon Challenge - Team LA - CraigAnd then there's Craig. He runs up mountains for fun. He was the only marathon runner. He did his part in big jags. During the second circuit, he nearly got 'swatted' by an LAPD SWAT team investigating can urgent call at singer Rhianna's estate. And last week, he ran a half marathon run on behalf of the fallen at the Boston Marathon.  I've worked with Craig in our day jobs off and on the entire time we've lived in LA.  He is a gifted writer whose life seems to be out of any Coen Brothers movie.  He's never been an actor, but he is one of the most entertaining people I know.  He also looked after me when I was at my sickest by taking me tquotecloseo and from appointments and making my sides split with laughter. What we did wasn't a lot in the face of the terrible toll this cancer takes, but we had to do something. I'm very proud of the team and the team is proud to be part of this incredible effort.
