Dr. Laura Lambert was born and raised in Burlington, Vermont and is a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. It was during a volunteer surgical mission in Haiti in 1990 that Dr. Lambert realized that she wanted to be a surgeon. After returning from Haiti, Dr. Lambert attended Harvard Medical School and completed residency in general surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. During her residency, Dr Lambert was further inspired to pursue a career in surgical oncology while working on vaccines for patients afflicted by cancer. She then went for fellowship training in surgical oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. After completing fellowship, Dr Lambert joined the faculty at M.D. Anderson as an assistant professor in surgical oncology with a clinical focus on the surgical management of peritoneal-based malignancies, including the use of intraperitoneal chemotherapy. During her tenure at M.D. Anderson, Dr Lambert developed a national reputation for the care of patients with carcinomatosis and also initiated a translational research program investigating the potential use of therapy targeted at alterations in the cell cycle of cancer cells as a means of sensitizing cancer cells to chemotherapy.

Recognizing a growing national need for comprehensive care for patients with peritoneal-based cancers, Dr Lambert was recruited to the UMass Memorial Medical Center to continue her clinical and research efforts. While at UMass, she became board-certified in Palliative Medicine and was promoted to associate professor. Her research efforts included the formation of the UMass Appendiceal Cancer Research Group. In January 2018, she was recruited to the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah in Salk Lake City to start a new peritoneal malignancy program. Through comprehensive patient-centred care, research and education, Dr Lambert hopes to improve the outcomes and alleviate the suffering caused by appendiceal and other peritoneal-based cancers. She also continues to volunteer as a surgeon in Haiti.
