John H. Stewart, IV, MD, MBA, FACS

Surgeon, Associate Professor

John H. Stewart, IV, M.D., M.B.A., is one of eight faculty members of the Wake Forest Baptist Health Surgical Oncology Service. He currently serves as the Vice Chair of Surgery, Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program, and Associate Dean for Clinical Research and Innovation

Prior to completing his residency in general surgery at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2004, Dr Stewart completed fellowships in surgical oncology and tumour immunotherapy at the National Cancer Institute under the direction of Dr Steven Rosenberg.  Dr Stewart gained an extensive understanding of tumour immunology during his fellowship.  His current clinical focus is on advancing biotherapy approaches to breast, gastrointestinal, and renal cell cancers.

Dr Stewart has published over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals including Cancer, Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Journal of Immunotherapy, Annals of Surgical Oncology, the Journal of Surgical Research, the American Journal of Surgery and Transplantation.

Dr Stewart has received numerous awards including the Harold Amos Fellowship of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the 2013 National Cancer Institute Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award.  He is also listed in Best Doctors of America.
