Tara overcame a rare form of cancer, which affects only one in two million people, to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter in Gateshead. During the recruitment process for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Tara began feeling unwell and was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. Unfortunately, during her keyhole surgery to remove the cyst, doctors discovered a tumour in her appendix with a malignant mucus lining. Tara underwent immediate open surgery to remove the affected appendix, ovary, and cyst.
