In our workshops with Dr Jason Spendelow, we’ve been looking at how we can deal with the feelings we have after a diagnosis with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) or appendix cancer. One of the techniques Jason introduced us to is expansion. Expansion means opening up and making room for challenging thoughts, impulses, and sensations, enabling them without a fight to “flow into” you. You don’t have to be like or want these; you just make room for them and allow them to be there, even if they’re uncomfortable. Once you’ve learned how to do this, if these emotions resurface, you have tools to make room for them and let them “rush on by” so that instead of struggling, you can spend your time and energy performing positive life-enhancing things. Try this each day.
